Fascinating account. I found your blog while following links in search of a bird call I heard this afternoon. I never expected to read something like you related -- although, I am aware of the laziness of the cowbird!

I live in the mid-Atlantic region, northern Delaware to be more precise. So, may not encounter many of your bird neighbors. Nonetheless, I will have to return again -- to see what new things I can learn.

Nice story! I'm all for new holidays! This Merganser Day, on my daily lunch time walk to Lake Michigan, I saw 5 Red-breasted Mergansers, 1 Common Merganser, and 1 Hooded Merganser X Common Goldeneye hybrid. So it was a very good Merganser Day, even though I didn't know it at the time.

Andrew,

Interesting you should mention the modded Marantz sounding better that a stock Fostex. I got Oade's super mod on the Fostex FR2-LE and have been very happy with it. I use the Fostex with a dpa 4060 lav mic for recording high quality oral histories which I edit in Adobe Audition 2.0. If you haven't already, consider getting a Tamiya-type 7.2 volt battter pack for longer, stronger battery performance.

Hi Andrew...when you want to remove a low frequency background noise in Adobe Audition do you capture a profile of the 'offending' noise and then filter it out of the entire track, or do you have a more sophisticated means? I've used the former in AA 1.5 with mostly ok results although some slight distortion is heard depending on what I'm removing (e.g. when I removed the babbling brook to highlight the dipper, the dipper is still recognizable but sounds a bit echoey).

I was just wondering if you had some favourite editing techniques with some of the other filters. I now have AA 2.0 so I'm trying to find my way around that.

This is very encouraging, and the inventor Lang Elliot is one of my favorite nature recordists around. He suffered from hearing loss and this device was his attempt to recover what he had lost. Great review. Thank you.

Thanks for the tips above--I am still awaiting the day when these recording devices can tell me what bird it is--or present a list of suitable candidates.

There was a consumer product out there (awhile back) developed by researchers at one time but it is no longer available and they told me they were working on a better product (this about 2-3 years ago). Still waiting. Gary
